Roxbury Elementary School in Solon teams with Solon-based company CardPak to honor Earth Day By Kyla Price, Sun News Pictured are Roxbury Elementary School students Amanda Garry and Sophia Giallanza during the school's CardPak planting.Courtesy of Solon School District SOLON — Roxbury Elementary School in Solon partnered with Solon-based company CardPak April 23 to engage in a special program entitled, "Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees." Nationwide, TICCIT took place April 22-26. The program serves as an annual outreach and educational program for school-aged children and is held each year at the end of April. The purpose of TICCIT is to honor Earth Day and highlight the renewability and sustainability of paper and paperboard packaging. Companies choose to participate as volunteers for the program, providing donations and lessons to local students. Organizations start by giving a presentation at their local elementary schools, instructing students about the benefits of recycling. They also teach youths about how paper is made and why trees are important to the earth's lifecycle. Afterward, they donate tree seeds or native saplings to each child, which are then planted in a milk carton. Youths learn about the versatility of disposable goods by saving milk cartons from home or school and then making carton-and-tree units. In 2012, eighteen Paperboard Packaging Council members participated in the TICCIT program, distributing 15,500 saplings to school children across the U.S. This is nearly five times the number of saplings planted during the program's first year in 2009, during which 3,200 saplings were distributed. While cartons are great for keeping milk fresh, they're also effective at providing protection for roots and acting as a natural water funnel for new trees. In Solon, students personally handcrafted their cardboard planters. As their trees grew, students learned about the biodegrading process as it applies to cardboard, which illustrated the "trees into cartons, cartons into trees" cycle. Once they're ready, students will be able to plant their trees in the ground. Solon School District spokesperson Tamara Strom said TICCIT is an effective tool for teaching children about the importance recycling and regenerating earth's resources. "It's a really fun program that students look forward to," she said. 8th Annual Sustainable Packaging Exposition '13Friday, March 08, 2013

CARDPAK®, INC., THE PAPERBOARD PACKAGING COUNCIL AND SOLON SCHOOLS TEAM UP ON EARTH DAYSunday, April 22, 2012
Organizations sponsor TICCIT – the trees into cartons, cartons into trees program for 4th graders at Roxbury Elementary School. SOLON, OH – April 22, 2010 – CardPak, the pioneer in developing and manufacturing environmentally-sustainable packaging, donated tree saplings to teach Roxbury Elementary school students about the natural renewability of paperboard packaging. Tony Petrelli, President of CardPak (www.cardpak.com), and the Chairman of the Board of the Paperboard Packaging Council, explained “we’re thrilled to once again have the opportunity to teach elementary school kids about paperboard as a renewable resource and its recycled potential. The TICCIT program (Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees, pronounced “ticket”) is a great way to demonstrate how fun and easy it is to take care of the Earth.” Fourth graders brought paperboard milk cartons from home and CardPak donated over 100 saplings and soil. The students planted the saplings in the paperboard cartons. At home, the students poke holes in the carton and plant it directly in the ground. The cartons provide protection and a natural water funnel for the new trees. As the trees grow, the cartons breakdown and provide a natural biodegradable fertilizer. This completes the trees into cartons, cartons into trees cycle. “It’s a great opportunity to engage the future leaders of America in a fun and earth-friendly activity”, said Mr. Petrelli. The TICCIT program celebration took place on April 21st at Roxbury Elementary School, located just 2.3 miles from CardPak’s worldwide headquarters. Roxbury Elementary School Principal, Carla Rodenbucher, was pleased to receive CardPak’s donation of over 100 tree saplings in celebration of Earth Day. “At Roxbury, we’re all about providing our students with hands-on learning opportunities like the TICCIT program. What better way to teach kids about the benefits associated with paperboard recycling and planting trees, than providing them with the materials to make it happen?” explained Ms. Rodenbucher. As a follow up to the TICCIT activity, students in the 4th grade advisory council are visiting CardPak’s printing and manufacturing plant to see, firsthand, how environmentally sustainable packaging is made. About CardPak CardPak, Inc., a pioneer in developing sustainable packaging, is a leading supplier of packaging products to consumer marketing companies across the globe. Cheryl Browsky, Marketing Manager at CardPak, recently attended Pac Next in conjunction with Pack Ex Toronto. Companies like P&G, Coca Cola, Costco, WalMart, Target and Unilever are uniting in an effort to lead North American organizations across the packaging value chain to collaboratively explore, evaluate and mobilize innovative packaging end-of-life solutions. The message heard loud and clear is that we must all be active participants in reducing our industry’s carbon footprint. Through continuous innovation and sustainability efforts to reduce packaging’s impact on the environment by examining an economical recovery that leads to improved reduction, recycling, reuse, up-cycling, composting energy-from-waste and other emerging technologies.
By using life cycle analysis and in depth reviews of products, raw materials, manufacturing processes, distribution and consumer use, we can innovate proper solutions that address attitudes and behaviors as they relate to discussions around packaging from creation to disposal.
A world without waste will only be achieved through the convergence of ideas and identification of sustainable opportunities and solutions.
