Corporate Values
Concern about the environment and a strategic commitment to sustainable practices and products were key cultural components of CardPak many years prior to the present demands and needs of our society. CardPak felt it critical to develop an organization that would establish policies and objectives that would protect the environment, benefit our employee's health and safety, and provide a more efficient way of manufacturing. We also felt that it was critical to design packaging products that utilize renewable resources and reduce the amount of total materials, while providing consumers a better package for protecting and dispensing the products they buy.
CardPak became ISO 14001:2004 certified to ensure our compliance with all standards and regulations for environmental management systems. We are committed to business and manufacturing processes that ensure the most efficient use of energy and provide a significant reduction in product and material waste. Examples of these efforts include the use of sustainable and recycled material in building improvements in our plant, such as environmentally certified drywall and paint to recycled carpet and furniture. Changing our lighting system in the plant will cut both our energy consumption and CO2 emissions by over half, saving a potential 600 barrels of oil per year. By adopting a very aggressive lean manufacturing strategy, we have reduced our in-plant manufacturing waste by over 2% per month, which will reduce the amount of paperboard waste going to the landfill or having to be collected for recycling by close to 350 tons annually. However, as a printer and converter of paperboard materials, we are able to collect and provide over 2,700 tons of fiber waste per year for use in the manufacturing of recycled paperboard for future packaging products.
It is also our responsibility to educate our employees, our vendors, our contractors and our customers on their individual roles in supporting CardPak's environmental practices. Part of that education also includes the safety and health of our employees and visitors. It is our on-going commitment to ensure that every person that works at CardPak has a healthy quality of life during and after their employment. By maintaining our ISO 14001 standards, we can make sure that our employees are protected from harmful chemicals and processes that may affect their health.
The sustainability commitment we have built throughout the CardPak organization gave us a tremendous platform to further review the impact that packaging products, primarily the over use of PVC plastic materials, have been making on the environment. As a result, CardPak has developed sustainable packaging solutions that address the needs of the consumer packaged goods manufacturers and the ecological demands of today's leading retailers. Our EcoLogical Line of Packaging™ solutions offer breakthrough design and execution that is strong, attractive, economical and environmentally conscious. Our ClubPak™ and SustainPak™ products eliminate up to 85% of the plastic currently used in clamshell packaging. These products also use more economical, environmentally-friendly paperboard materials, while reducing harmful contaminants from the waste stream. As a matter of fact, the SustainPak product uses only 100% recycled paperboard and recycled plastic blisters.
CardPak's strategic commitment to sustainability and the protection of the environment is a driving force for our future. Life cycle analysis and "cradle-to-cradle" evaluations are part of our everyday mainstream culture. This environmental philosophy is an integral part of who we are and not just a short-term response to a popular movement.
